Why We Skip From Teacher to Teacher

Posted by on May 31, 2012 in blog | 9 comments

Have you noticed how every teacher in your life at some point will say or do something, and you suddenly become totally disillusioned with them,  and promptly move on to another teacher, teaching or modality?

Do you think this is an accident?
I’ve come to see that it is not.

This is because every teacher or modality comes with a built-in expiration date,
a self-destruct button if you will —  hand created by Life itself.

Does this mean you no longer read, listen, watch or follow teachers who call to you?  Does this mean you don’t bother teaching?

NO.

It means you take what each precious teacher has come to give you, you keep what fits and what fuels your expanding truth, and you FINALLY ACCEPT that NO TEACHER in this entire world holds ANYTHING that you do not already have within you, fully accessible, at all times.

It means you teach from that very same knowing.

So that everyone who passes in your reality will know there is nothing they truly need from you.
And that EVERYTHING they find in you

is already their own.

No teacher has ever said or done anything “wrong”  —  they have just delivered, right on time, the message that you desperately needed to hear…

“don’t take my word for it sweetheart… look within,
find out for yourself.”

P.S. -  you may stay with a teacher for a lifetime, but there will still come a time when they will force you to look at this. Like I said, it’s built-in. :)  and P.P.S – it has been said before: all the wisdom we could ever need in this world already exists, but until it is fully realized in YOU, they are just words. Just fingers pointing to the moon.

  2. Ten years ago or more, my favorite hero and teacher was Woody Guthrie…what a crazy genius he was. My fascination faded, like you say, but there’s hardly a day goes by that I don’t hear Woody in the music I listen to, or “see” him in the beautiful landscapes of our country, or know that his essence is echoed in everyone who works for peace and justice.

Teachers come and go…all part of the flow :)

    • Oh my goodness Laurie – YES! some of the greatest teachers of my entire life have been Musicians. Truly! Thank you for sharing that beautifully written sentiment about Woody, “his essence is echoed in everyone who works for peace and justice.” – stunning! xo

  3. I really enjoyed this post because only in the last couple of years have I had the courage to let these teachers go. I believed that when I became disillusioned by people (since all people are teachers in one way or another) it was my fault, that I had done something wrong or wasn’t getting ‘it’. Then I met a teacher who I thought was everything I needed – she was who I wanted to be – and I followed her. I invested in her courses, bought her products and then got frustrated when things didn’t change. One day, one of her other students had a bad experience in a group setting, and rather than take this lady aside and concentrate on her issues, she dismissed them and moved on to the young handsome man in the group. In that instance, I understood that she was not what I thought and most definitely was not what/who I wanted to be. For the first time ever I believed my instincts. Ultimately she was a great teacher because that was the lesson she taught me – trust my instincts and believe in myself. I don’t need her anymore. I will need other teachers and when I have learned what I need to learn, I will move on because now I’ll know when the time comes. (Blimey, that was almost long enough to be a post of my own!)

    • Thank you for sharing your experience and story Karen, I’m sure so many people can relate to that!! I have had quite a few moments in my life where I have been forced to relinquish my outward-looking and finally trust my own instincts and intuition as well. I could not possibly agree more that EVERYONE is our teacher – especially our children, husbands and families! ;) They’ll give us every piece we need for our own enlightenment. ;) love to you! xo

  4. Popped over last night from Hannah Marcotti and am delighted to meet you. So much resonance for me with your story and perspective.

I’m soothed by the reminder of this post. One of the heartaches that continues to surface for me occasionally is the loss of my childhood religion. And this, even though that loss was actually a heart-opening, LIFE nourishing experience. I’m guessing that reminders like this post will be important for me for many years to come.

    • So nice to meet you Kristin! Thank you for sharing this with me, I love it so much when I get to see how this speaks to people on different levels concerning different subject matter. Yes, I continually need this reminder, and I love how each time I write it or read it – it’s like it’s the same message, but on a WHOLE NEW LEVEL. And I love how that level keeps expanding deeper and deeper in me. It’s actually phenomonal to watch, as long as I don’t have the story playing that says “I already GOT this, I should be over this” – as long as I’m not believing that old story, then I can really appreciate how it’s actually totally NEW each time, it’s just sinking down deeper and deeper right down to the core. Thank you for being here, love! xo

  5. Yes! I love this post. The past couple of years have seen me flutter quite quickly through experiences with some teachers. Reading this made me realise that this was actually “normal” (yay!), and also that where I got disillusioned with some aspect of the teaching or teacher could be used as a signpost to more fully understand what mattered most to me and to develop that more fully. It’s also teaching me to be less judgemental and accept that we are all humans doing the best we an.

    • Thank you dearly Kate! That is absolutely right… isn’t it liberating to know? Thank you for being here!
